Division of Motor Vehicles

Vehicle Services General Information

Customer Waiting Times

The Division recognizes that at times the wait for customer service can be extremely long. DMV is dedicated to providing first class service to its customers. At times, however, customers may find the wait for DMV services to be longer than desired. Customers can minimize or avoid long waits by visiting Division facilities during non-peak periods.

Customer waits are traditionally longer on the 15th and 30th of each month due to past use of these dates as the main expiration points. Despite DMV now issuing actual title dates for expiration, old habits are hard to break for many customers. All Wednesdays are normally busy and, when a registration expiration period falls on a Wednesday, customer waits can be even longer.

Normally, the best times for short waits are between 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays when these days do not fall close to a registration expiration period. The day after a holiday and the entire month of November, due to the number of holidays that occur during that month, are also busy. The Division may, at times, have to close inspection lanes early when customer-waiting times exceed operating hours. This prevents customers from waiting in lines for a long period of time and not having their vehicle inspected due to the closing time. The Division recommends that customers renew your vehicle registration as early as possible. Vehicles may be inspected up to 90 days before the registration is due. Renewing early will not change your registration due date and will allow time to correct any vehicle problems.
